Biography

LMC Pathology Services, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is privileged to include Joel S. Bentz, M.D., as a part of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Bentz is a board-certified pathologist who has extensive hospital and professional experience with an impressive academic and teaching background.

Dr. Bentz graduated with a degree in biology from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He obtained his Master of Science degree in anatomy and cell biology from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He received his medical degree from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Here, he subsequently completed a medical internship and transitional residency. He went on to complete an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center in Salt Lake City. He later completed a cytopathology fellowship at the Hospitals of The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia before returning to the University of Utah to complete a mini fellowship in medical leadership at the David Eccles School of Business.

Dr. Bentz has developed a considerable array of professional, teaching and research experience. For many years, he was director of the laboratories and the Cytopathology Research Section of ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City. He was also head of the Cytopathology Section of the University of Utah, where he has taught dozens of courses and workshops for over 20 years. He has participated in over 30 funded research projects and has contributed to five patented medical innovations. He is currently a laboratory inspector and accreditation reviewer for the College of American Pathologists and has been with LMC Pathology Services since 2009.

Dr. Bentz has authored and co-authored over 80 articles, abstracts, reviews and book chapters for peer-reviewed medical journals and textbooks. He has been published in journals such as Cancer, Diagnostic Cytopathology, Acta Cytologica, and Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, among others. He is a peer reviewer for over a dozen medical journals and has given numerous poster and oral presentations at professional society meetings.

Dr. Bentz is a member of professional medical organizations, including the Association for Molecular Pathology and the American Society of Cytopathology.

Dr. Bentz holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and cytopathology.
