Laboratory Medicine
Consultants requires written consent from the patient or the legal guardian of
the patient for the disposal of fetal tissue/products of conception.
A miscarriage is defined
as products of conception under 20 weeks gestation and less than 500g. Ensure receipt of a “Consent For Disposal of
Products of Conception” with specimen requisition. If a specimen arrives without “Consent for
Disposal of Products of Conception Form”, the specimen will be rejected by the
laboratory and returned to the physician’s office.
A stillbirth is defined by
Nevada Revised Statue (44.070) as: “A
fetal death over 20 weeks gestation and weighing 500g or greater”. Laboratory Medicine Consultants does not perform
autopsies on outpatient cases. Any fetus
greater than 20 weeks requires burial by Nevada State Regulation.
