NON-GYNECOLOGIC CYTOLOGY

In general, LMC cytology laboratory prefers that fluid cytology specimens (non-gynecologic) be submitted in the fresh state (without fixative) to the laboratory for processing. If delays in transport or processing are anticipated, the specimen should be refrigerated.  Secure the lids of specimen containers tightly.

The Exceptions Are:

·        Brush specimens – fix immediately in 95% alcohol.

·        Specimen in RPMI – leave specimen at room temperature.

·        FNA’s – refer to FNA procedure.

·        Tzanck smears – fix immediately in 95% alcohol prior to transport.

·        Bile specimens for crystal analysis - Keep at room temperature – call for STAT pick-up.

·        Synovial fluid for crystal analysis – Keep at room temperature – call for STAT pick-up.
