Department of Cytopathology
Overview
Laboratory Medicine Consultants (LMC) has
a full-service Cytology department that provides consultative
expertise in gynecologic and nongynecologic cytology. LMC also has a
fine–needle aspiration (FNA) clinic, where cytopathologists
with subspecialty training in FNA perform biopsies and provide rapid
diagnoses for patients with palpable mass lesions.
LMC Cytopathologists
Jonathan H. Hughes, M.D., Ph.D
June D. Sigman, M.D.
Paul J. Michaels, M.D.
Drs. Hughes, Sigman, and Michaels have
published numerous articles in scientific and medical journals, and have
presented invited talks and workshops at national and international
Cytopathology conferences.
Gynecologic Cytopathology
LMC is dedicated to providing timely, high quality medical care
for women. To that end, all of the gynecologic cytology specimens
received by our laboratory are interpreted by Board-certified
cytopathologists. LMC performs interpretations of both conventional
Pap smears and liquid-based (Thin-Prep®) specimens. Turnaround time
on these specimens is rapid and most of our clients receive their
final reports within 48 - 72 hours of receipt of the specimen by our
laboratory. LMC offers HPV DNA testing on Thin-Prep® specimens
through relationships with reference laboratories.
LMC prides itself on providing personalized service for its Ob-Gyn
clients. Below are just a few examples of the way that LMC
tries to help our individual clients streamline their practices
and facilitate their patient care.
Most of LMC's physician clients request reflex high risk HPV testing on all Pap smears with a diagnosis of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS). However, LMC recognizes that some physicians prefer to establish different algorithms for HPV DNA testing, based upon parameters such as patient age or clinical history. LMC will accommodate these individual preferences in order to provide HPV testing that is personalized to every physician. Our goal is to help each one of our clients streamline their patient care by providing individualized, personalized testing services.
Nongynecologic Cytopathology
LMC offers a comprehensive array of consultation services in
nongynecologic cytopathology, including respiratory cytology, body
cavity cytology, and urinary tract cytology. LMC also interprets
fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology specimens from all body sites,
including thyroid gland, lung, liver, lymph node, and kidney. In
addition to performing morphologic interpretation, LMC offers a
sophisticated and exhaustive collection of ancillary tests, such as immunocytochemistry,
cytogenetic analysis, microbiologic assays, DNA ploidy studies, and
flow cytometric immunophenotyping, when these tests are deemed
necessary to confirm a diagnosis or to select an appropriate
therapy.
The LMC cytopathologists are happy to perform in-office tutorials
for those clients who would like some help learning how to prepare
smears and handle the FNA specimens.
Turnaround time for most nongynecologic cytology specimens is 24-48
hours. |
